Maple Sugaring
At Sweet Maple Alpacas we have been making our own Maple Syrup for over twenty years.
We make our syrup by tapping maple trees in the spring. Any time from February
to April the sap begins to run. This happens when the days warm up into the mid
40's, and the nights go down to the mid 20's.
To collect the sap from the maple tree you must tap into the tree. Tapping is
done by drilling a hole into the maple tree and hammering a spout into the hole.
From the spout we hang a bucket and place a cover over the bucket. For our deep
woods maple trees we run plastic tubing from tree to tree and the sap runs down
the tubing into a big collection tank.
Each afternoon the sap is pumped into a gathering tank and trucked to the
sugarhouse for boiling. It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make just one gallon
of pure maple syrup. Boiling is done on a wood fired stainless steel arch. This
process will usually take us until well after midnight.
